Heating of Swedish buildings is now virtually independent of oil and coal, a transformation which to a large extent is due to district heating. The introduction of district heating has, thus, revolutionised the Swedish energy market.  It has also caused a reduction of CO2-emissions of around 20%.

Despite this remarkable progress, district heating still has the greatest potential among available technologies for making heating even more cost-efficient, and for a continued reduction of CO2-emissions.
